Bill’s Story

“There’s always something going on.”

“The social engagement is huge here,” says Summerhill PARC resident Bill, with a laugh that can enliven an entire room. Bill’s schedule keeps him busy both inside and outside the residence. He hits the PARC FIT exercise class three times weekly, heads out by bus to attend a Chamber Music series at the Academy of Music, volunteers at Lions Gate Hospital once a week and is a voracious reader. He uses the computer daily and plays music from his ever-growing CD collection.

In Bill’s books, staying busy is the key to happiness “My kids are always saying I seem very happy… to which I say: I am!!” he grins. “I feel at home here. And there’s always something going on.”

To keep his mind nimble, Bill has taken up SCRABBLE and attends the PARC GREY MATTERS brain fitness classes. Not surprising at all, considering he went back to school after retirement and attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in history at the age of 80.

Bill says he liked the feel of Summerhill PARC from the moment he stepped in the doors. He likens it to the ambience of a nice hotel: welcoming, clean, inviting and centrally located. “It hasn’t got the feel of a retirement home at all.”

Although he spent many years in Kerrisdale previously, and never really came to the North Shore, Bill now wonders why he didn’t move sooner. After all, he has convenient access to two things he loves dearly: his daughters who live nearby and stunning views to the North Shore mountains.

That’s how it is at Summerhill PARC: It’s so easy to embrace your interests or start something brand new. And with PARC’s focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind through our Independent Living+ program, it’s easy to see how life’s just better here.
