Aging Is a Gift. Here’s How to Embrace It
in Active AgingWritten by PARC Retirement Living
It’s not always easy to accept – much less embrace – the changes we go through in each stage of life – especially as we get older.
Society has long painted aging as a negative – something to delay, fight or fear. But here’s what we believe: aging isn’t an inevitable decline – it’s the gift of wisdom, self-discovery and growth. And it’s a process that can be as fulfilling, lively, joyful and satisfying as we make it.
Growing older and living better go hand-in-hand
At PARC we’ve seen how a healthy approach to aging brings confidence, resilience, a stronger sense of self and – if you’re open to them – opportunities to redefine what life looks like at every stage.
At Oceana PARC in White Rock, for example, four of the very first residents to move in – Willa, Rose, Evelyn and Fran – celebrated their 99th birthdays with a toast to their thriving lives, which include everything from regular Bocce ball and bridge games, to cheering on the Blue Jays.

Meanwhile, over at Cristalina PARC in Kelowna, 96-year-old resident Annette recently checked off a lifelong dream to go kayaking – proving you’re never too old to try something new.

These are just a few of the many PARC residents who are embracing aging with genuine gusto. If you’re ready to give it a try, here’s how to start:
- Prioritize health and well-being
Physical, emotional and mental health are the foundation for aging well, and keeping on top of healthy practices is important. This means staying physically and mentally active, eating balanced and nutritious meals and engaging in mindfulness practices. PARC’s Active LivingTM program is designed to help residents thrive in four key areas: nutrition, fitness, social connections and well-being.
- Accept physical changes with grace
We’ve all heard about the concept of ‘aging gracefully’, but what does it really mean? While the definition may vary slightly for everyone, the core concept starts with self-compassion. In a society that values youth, it can be difficult to accept our bodies as they age. But a changing body is natural and inevitable, and acceptance is important. Aging gracefully means not allowing physical changes to define you, and instead, focusing on what you can do to live healthily and happily at every age – whether it’s exercise, hobbies, travel, a vibrant social life or having a comfortable place to call home.
- Discover new hobbies and experiences
You’re never too old to cultivate curiosity. In fact, trying new things keeps the mind sharp and the spirit youthful. Whether it’s trying a painting class, picking up pickleball or exploring a neighbouring community, new experiences bring the opportunity to discover new passions, make new friendships, combat isolation and create a sense of purpose. Studies have shown that older adults with an active lifestyle have a longer lifespan and are less likely to develop certain diseases.
- Foster social connections and community
Isolation can be a big challenge as we age, but it doesn’t have to be. Building strong social connections can bolster emotional well-being – and there are many community programs available to help seniors foster those relationships. At PARC, for example, our lively social calendars, shared dining experiences and welcoming common spaces make it easy to build friendships and create a true sense of belonging. We also offer local excursions to community centres and seniors’ programming beyond our residences.
- Be intentional about where you live
Your environment plays a big role in how you experience aging. Choosing a place that supports your independence while also providing opportunities for connection, care and an active lifestyle can transform your daily life. And did you know that living in a neighbourhood you love can deeply impact your well-being?
PARC’s independent living communities are located in the best, most walkable and centrally located neighbourhoods – with all the amenities you need right at your fingertips. Plus, you’re surrounded by like-minded people who share a commitment to living fully – and there’s nothing more uplifting than that.
Your best years are here
At the end of the day, aging isn’t about the number – it’s about making every moment count. By embracing change, staying curious and surrounding yourself with people and experiences that foster health, joy and fulfillment, you can embrace every day for what it is: a new opportunity to live a truly fulfilling life.
