“It really started at hello”, says Marlene, a four-year resident of Cedar Springs PARC who recently married Richard, another resident. Marlene, a native of Vancouver, moved into the newly-built Cedar Springs after her husband of 60 years passed away. She loves walking and had been trying to find some ladies to go on regular walks with her, when she noticed Richard leaving the residence daily, with a pack on his back.
Marlene thought it couldn’t hurt to say “hello” and ask if Richard would mind if she came along every now and then. So, she did, and he agreed. Richard had moved into Cedar Springs PARC in the fall of 2014, from Winnipeg. His wife of 59 years had passed away earlier that year, and with none of his six children living nearby, he decided to make the move to North Vancouver to be closer to one of his sons.
Over the next year, during their regular walks, Richard and Marlene discovered many similarities in their stories, and shared interests such as music and singing. Richard, a former French history professor of French heritage, started up the French conversation group at Cedar Springs PARC and is helping Marlene get in touch with her partial French background. Meanwhile, she’s teaching him some of her mother’s native Swedish language. Both are very active and enjoy participating in fitness classes such as Chi Gong, Zumba Gold and yoga. Richard rises early to be the first one in the Cedar Springs gym and Marlene works out with the PARC FIT program. “There are just so many opportunities here to be active”, says Richard.
The two decided to get married and tied the knot in June 2016, at nearby St. Pius X church – all six of Richard’s children and both of Marlene’s attended, along with numerous family members and grandchildren. The happy couple hosted a reception for everyone at Cedar Springs afterwards. “They’re all our friends now!”, says Marlene. They have settled into a two-bedroom suite with sweeping views of downtown, Point Grey and the North Shore mountains.
A honeymoon to Prague is planned for the fall of 2016.
